Our Mixologist and Certified Sommelier speaks about how Venue Restaurant & Lounge gives her the opportunity to compete in national bartender competitions. She enjoys getting the opportunity to stretch her creative ideas in this setting and bring the experience back to the restaurant.
This week I competed in the Bombay Sapphire Most Imaginative Bartender Competition in Omaha.
“I am Barrie Kuhn. I’m the mixologist and certified sommelier at Venue. I’ve been here a little over 8 years. This week I competed in the Bombay Sapphire Most Imaginative Bartender Competition in Omaha. This was the first round of it and whoever wins this goes onto the next regional and whoever wins the regional goes onto the finals in London. The whole premise of the competition was to use Bombay Sapphire as your base to come up with the most imaginative drink possible. This time was very different. It was just myself and the two judges. They were able to give a lot of good feedback and it was a little more one on one than previous competitions in the past. One of my favorite cocktails is a french 75. I named my cocktail my darling clementine. Instead of using lemon juice, I used fresh clementine juice, Bombay Sapphire as my base, a little bit of aperol, and a fresh ginger syrup, and then topped it with prosecco. A couple of botanicals in Bombay Sapphire are lemon peel and coriander. I thought that would pair really well with the orange flavor of the clementine and the aperol. At Venue we are always coming up with new cocktails and changing the menu seasonally. If you don’t see something that you like, we can always make something special for you.”
